Spelling
We will be working on spelling words each week. Student lists are individualized and contain High Frequency Words for grade 3, Lesson of the Week words that will help your child become word solvers, and incorrect words from your child's writing. Daily practice and Spelling Tests happen at school. Spelling Tests are about every sixth day. Look for your child's words in his planner!
Writer's Notebooks
Ralph Fletcher says, "Writers are like other people, except for at least one important difference; Other people have daily thoughts and feelings, notice this sky or that smell, but they don't do much about it. all those thoughts, feelings, sensations, and opinions pass through them like the air they breathe. Writer's react and need a place to record those reactions. That's what a Writer's Notebook is for." It gives you a place to write down what makes you sad, angry, or amazed, to write what you noticed and don't want to forget, to record exactly what your grandmother whispered in your ear before she said goodbye. Occasionally, optional assignments will be sent home to notice and record different words, events, descriptions, etc. in your Home Writing Journals. A Writer's Notebook or Home Writing Journal gives you a place to live like a writer, not just in school during writing time, but where ever you are, at any time of day!
Homework for the Year
Spelling
Teachers in Grade Three were trained in a new word study program from Fountas and Pinnelle. Your child will practice their spelling these words each day at school. Students' lists will be individualized and comprised of sight words, concept words (spelling rules they need to master) words from the curriculum, and past words that have not been mastered yet. This plan is subject to change with more training and I will keep you posted on these changes!
Math
The math program all grades will use this year is EnVisions 2.0. This program last year has many home components. There will be math homework on Monday through Thursday night that goes with the day’s lesson as well as a math facts review. It is expected that every third grade student practices their facts every night. Your child should already know addition and subtraction facts to 18 automatically. Please review addition and subtraction math facts orally or with flash cards if you have them, and later in the year, multiplication and division facts. Another fun way to practice is with the computer. Information containing your child’s password and user name, as well as access information, will be written in your child’s Planner in September. There will be timed math facts tests every Friday. Homework from the EnVision math program will also be posted on my web page. If you have any questions about math homework, please ask!
Reading
Your child should be reading to you 10-20 minutes each day at home the first half of the year and 20-30 minutes the second half of the year. Remember to write the name of the book, the number of minutes, and sign the planner every day. Your child earns a ticket for Fun Friday every time you sign the planner and bring the planner to school! Reading fluency/comprehension passages or books that may be sent home to practice and can be used for the reading time that night!
Social Studies, Science, and Reading
At certain times during the year, your child will be assigned a project to be completed at home. The projects reinforce what your child learns in school. Each project will come with a rubric so you will know exactly what is expected. Each project will be tied to the Common Core Standards based on the Massachusetts Framework for Grade 3.
Planner
Your child’s homework planner will be sent home each night with homework due written under the corresponding date. Please check the planner for notes and assignments; write the number of minutes and book your child read out loud; mark if you studied math facts; and sign and date the planner.
Please look at and initial your child’s behavior calendar that will come home on the first of the month. One ticket will be given each day for bringing the sighned planner to school each day. Tickets can be used on Fun Friday or at the school store! Thank you for your help.
Homework should average no more than 30-45 minutes per night. If it is a struggle, please contact me so we can work out an alternate plan. Students with all homework passed in and work finished on Friday get to participate in Fun Friday! Others are given the chance to finish and then join.
Please feel free to write, call (508)946-2045, or email Jo[email protected] with any questions. Your cooperation and support will help your child have a successful year. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Silva
